HAVE DINNER OR PLAY GOLF WITH YANKEE STAR DEREK JETER
Derek Jeter at his 3rd Annual Golf Classic
It was just three days before the start of the 2007 Major League Baseball season, and the New York Yankee star Derek Jeter was anxious to begin his 11th year in pinstripes. "You get tired of spring training," Jeter lamented in a phone call to NewYork.com from his Tampa home. "I'm ready to play."Jeter is also ready to play host to his annual Turn 2 Foundation dinner, a New York City event that is attended by many current and former Yankees players, as well as other sports stars and entertainers. The foundation has raised over $7 million dollars for organizations that promote healthy lifestyles among youths. This year’s dinner, scheduled for May 24, will be held at the New York Marriott Marquis. Anyone who is willing to contribute $10,000 for a table that seats 10 at the dinner, will get a chance to rub elbows with the Yankees shortstop. There are several other contribution levels, each providing different perks and access to Jeter himself. "We have group photos and a VIP meet and greet," says Jeter. "I get a chance to see everybody who's there."Read More

THE REBIRTH OF BEAUTY ON 42ND STREET
outside The New Amsterdam Theater." src="http://www.newyork.com/assets/news/images/PoppinsFOH.jpg" border=0> Mary Poppins flys high on the marquisoutside The New Amsterdam Theater.
Since the day that David Malmuth first walked into The New Amsterdam Theater on 42nd Street in New York’s famed Times Square, the memory of what he saw will never fade from his mind’s eye. “It was cold, dark and scary inside,” recalls Malmuth, who at the time had just been put in charge of the redevelopment of the legendary theater, which was originally built in 1903. “There were holes in the roof, bird’s nests and mushrooms growing inside the building. But once you started shining flashlights around the place you could see these little glimpses of the magic that was there.”
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the completion of Disney’s $35 million renovation of The New Amsterdam. With its ornate proscenium and elaborately sculptured walls all restored, this art nouveau jewel among Broadway theaters is the home to the new Disney hit musical, Mary Poppins. Like other Disney shows currently on Broadway – Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan, The Little Mermaid and The Lion King (which until recently, was staged at The New Amsterdam for most of the past decade) -- Mary Poppins is a stunning production. The storybook nanny, who first came to life in the 1964 film adaptation of the series of books by P.L. Travers, actually takes off and flies up into the same theater rooftop that Malmuth once saw in such daunting disrepair.
